About Arís Counselling and Psychotherapy

Aris Centre is a psychotherapy and counselling service located  in Dublin City Centre. Our centre is underpinned by the ethics and philosophy of psychoanalytic psychotherapy, humanistic integrative Psychotherapy and Counselling, respecting the confidentiality and psychical well being of each person that we work with. The centre also adopts and offers a non-judgmental service to all those who wish to speak. We do not use any form of suggestion and we strive to ensure and maintain the highest standards of professional competence in our work. 

Other therapies are offered by consultants (male and female) from the practice. These include Psychoanalysis, Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy and Counselling. All therapists who work in Arís have private professional indemnity insurance for the treatment they offer and each therapist is also a member of a professional body or organisation and abides by the code of ethics of this organisation.

Mr Cathal O'Keeffe

Biography: Cathal O’Keeffe Cert., BA Psych (Hons), MA (Hons)Cathal began his studies in Cultural and Behavioural Studies before going on to complete an Honours Bachelors degree in Psychology. During his degree Cathal worked voluntarily on the phones with Childline and following on from this he completed a Masters degree in Clinical Psychoanalysis and also a Certificate in ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training). During his time in the MA, Cathal gained valuable clinical experience working within multi-disciplinary teams in the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, the Rotunda Hospital, Trinity Court Drug Treatment Centre, Schizophrenia Ireland, the National Learning Network in association with RehabCare, St. Vincents University Hospital Elm Park and the Royal Hospital in Donnybrook. Cathal also worked with clients at the Department of Liaison Psychiatry in the Mater Hospital for two years where clients were recommended to see him by the psychiatry team. Cathal currently works privately as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist at both Aris Centre in Balbriggan and Aris Analytic Practice in Dublin City Centre and is a research supervisor and lecturer at DBS School of Arts in the Departments of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, Counselling and Psychotherapy and the Department of Psychology.

Biography: Stephen McCoy, BA Psych (Hons), MA (Hons)Stephen began his studies with an introductory course in psychoanalysis and philosophy in UCD in 2000. Following on from this Stephen completed a BA in psychology in 2004. While employed in the teaching of children with Autism and Aspergers syndrome he continued his studies with a post graduate diploma in psychoanalytic studies before completing an honours MA in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Stephen’s work concerns the counselling and psychotherapy of children and adolescents with a range of emotional and behavioural problems. This one to one counselling/psychotherapeutic approach has been built on experience gained in in national and primary schools in the Dublin area, The Lucena Clinic Tallaght and in private practice at Aris Co. Balbriggan.

Biography: Jean Scanlan, Counsellor/Psychotherapist, Dip. Psychotherapy., MIACPJean’s background is in journalism. Having graduated from The College of Commerce, Rathmines – now Dublin Institute of Technology – she worked in journalism for over twenty years. In 2008 she completed a four-year diploma training course in Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy with the Institute of Creative Counselling and Psychotherapy in Dun Laoghaire. Jean also has experience working as a volunteer with a number of organisations. She spent four years with Parentline, a telephone helpline for parents under stress, usually as a result of difficulties encountered around their children. She also worked as a tutor with the Dun Laoghaire Adult Literacy Group, working on a one-to-one basis with individuals experiencing problems with literacy.
