Biography: Dr. Rajkumar Palaniappan is a very well known laparoscopic & bariatric (obesity) surgeon from India, with the distinction of performing almost all types of laparoscopic surgeries described in world literature. He graduated in 1996 from south India and completed his post-graduation in surgery by the year 2000. Post-doctorship, he worked for two years under one of the leading surgical gastroenterologist from south India. He then went to the UK for his super-specialization in Laparoscopy and is one of the very few qualified masters degree holder in the laparoscopic field (MMAS) and one of the five in India. He worked under the doyen of laparoscopic surgery during his tenure in the UK, and also completed his Surgical Gastroenterology fellowship (FICS) from Illinois, USA in 2003. Dr. Raj returned to India by the end of 2003 with intention of developing his own laparoscopy unit. He worked in various teaching institutes & leading corporate hospitals in Coimbatore, Chennai & Goa. He is presently working as senior consultant in Apollo Hospitals (First JCIA International Accredited Hospital in the country) , a 750 bed super-specialty tertiary care hospital in Chennai. He along with his colleagues started a state-of-the-art laparoscopic training program in the name of "FLIP" to quarterly train surgeons in SILS & Robotic bariatric surgery.
