Biography: Dr. Narciso F. Atienza, Jr graduated from pre-med at the University of Santo Tomas College of Pharmacy, Faculty of Medical Technology in 1991. He subsequently entered the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, graduating in 1995. He spent one year as a post-graduate medical intern from May 1995 to May 1996 at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center. He obtained his license to practice medicine on August 1996 from the Professional Regulations Commission, after taking and passing the Philippine Board of Medicine examinations. His initial intention was to take up Thoracic and Cardio-Vascular Surgery as a specialty, but shifted to Ophthalmology instead. He first trained and observed as an ophthalmology preceptor of Dr. Antonio Say from January 1997 to September 1997 while waiting for an ophthalmology residency program. Dr. Atienza was accepted in an ophthalmology residency training program at the University of Santo Tomas Hospital. After ophthalmology residency in 2000, he trained as a preceptor in Vitreo-Retinal surgery again under Dr. Antonio Say, and Dr. Robert Uy, at the University of Santo Tomas Hospital. He also took and passed the examinations of the Philippine Board of Ophthalmology, becoming a specialist in Ophthalmology in 2001. He subsequently underwent a clinical fellowship in Vitreo-Retinal Diseases and Surgery at the University of Toronto, St. Michaels Hospital under Dr.Filiberto Altomare, Dr. Alan Berger, Dr. Louis Giavedoni and Dr. David Wong, finishing in 2004.Dr. Atienza is a board certified ophthalmologist, and a Fellow of the Philippine Academy of Ophthalmology, and the Philippine College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists, the European-Vitreo-Retinal Society, the European Society of Retina Specialists, and the Vitreo-Retinal Society of the Philippines.He has given lectures locally and abroad in the topics of Vitreo-Retinal Diseases and Surgery, and technology in Ophthalmology. He is also a board examiner of the Philippine Board of Ophthalmology. He is also a graduate of the Ateneo Graduate School of Business with a degree of Masters in Business Administration.Outside ophthalmology, he is an avid cyclist (road and mountain bike), a photographer, and an amateur Apple software developer. He is also an avid martial artist with a blackbelt in Taekwondo since 1988, and is trained in stick fighting (arnis de mano, espada y daga)
