Biography: Prof. Tuncay Ulug, MD, is consultant of Otorhinolaryngology / Head and Neck Surgery. Professor Ulug graduated from Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul University, in 1987. On completing his postgraduate training in otorhinolaryngology at the same institution in 1991 he joined the faculty. Between 1993 and 2001, over varying periods, while he was affiliated with his own institution, he attended several well-known clinics in otology, neurotology, skull base surgery, tumor surgery, facial plastic surgery and other areas of otorhinolaryngology, including Zürich University, St. James's Hospital, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York University Medical Center, Mount Sinai University, George Washington University Neurosurgical Department, the Mayo Clinic, the House Ear Institute and McCollough Plastic Surgery Clinic. In this way, after having learned the modern practices assimilated over nearly 80 years in his institution, and along with the work of many experienced and skilled colleagues around the world, he was inspired mainly by the ear and skull base techniques of Ugo Fisch, the otologic and neurotologic concepts of the House school, the neurosurgical perspectives of the skull base surgeon Laligam Sekhar, and the tumor philosophy of Jatin Shah. Professor Ulug's academic interests encompass the areas of otology, neurotology, skull base surgery and some fields of tumor surgery. However his clinical and surgical interests encompass all the areas of Otorhinolaryngology / Head and Neck Surgery. Dr. Ulug has delivered many scientific presentations and has contributed to many national and international scientific publications. He is the author of a book in Turkish "Temporal Kemik Cerrahisi", i.e. Temporal Bone Surgery; first edition 2002, second edition 2006. Additionally Dr. Ulug translated the first edition of "Tympanoplasty, Mastoidectomy and Stapes Surgery" by Prof. Ugo Fisch into Turkish in 1996, and translated the extended second edition of the same book as translation editor in 2011, both under the title "Timpanoplasti Mastoidektomi ve Stapez Cerrahisi". Dr. Ulug, as course director, organised in Istanbul Medical Faculty the annual "International Istanbul Temporal Bone Dissection and Otology / Neurotology Courses" for about ten years, in which participants from different countries from all over the world took part. Prof. Ulug designed the revolutionary "Ulug Double-Sided Ear Microsurgery Instruments", which have been produced and distrubuted internationally by the instrument company Karl Storz / Tuttlingen since 2007. Dr. Ulug has also pioneered several surgical techniques, and proposed a number of landmarks. His book "Atlas of Temporal Bone Surgery" was published by Thieme Publishers / Stuttgart-New York in English in 2010. The book contains about 30 classical surgical techniques described step by step with photographs, as well as 4 surgical techniques developed by Dr. Ulug which have gained recognition within the international community. "Atlas of Temporal Bone Surgery" meets the need for a comprehensive step by step teaching book in the field of otology-neurotology. Atlas of Temporal Bone Surgery" was honoured in the Book Awards Organisation 2011, by the British Medical Association. In this organisation all the new medical books published in English around the world were evaluated and "Atlas of Temporal Bone Surgery" was one of the seven books chosen and honoured with a "Highly Commended" Award in the category "Surgical Specialties" which encompasssed all branches of surgery. Dr. Ulug is an active member of the international professional organisations; Politzer Society, European Academy of Otology / Neuro-Otology and Deutsche Gesellschaft für HNO.
